    Smart Cities Meeting- Gothenburg June 2015

    City of Ghent -Solar Map

    The City of Ghent launched a new tool to stimulate the purchase of solar panels. On a digital map the solar potential of every roof in Ghent can be assessed. With this tool, citizens, shop owners and companies can easily discover how suitable their roof is for solar panels, and how much solar energy they can produce.

    Ghent Wins Climate Star Award

    Ghent won a Climate Star Award for coaching companies to reduce their energy consumption. In a pilot study the city of Ghent coached 15 companies. This resulted in a reduction of 1,820 tonnes C02 and total financial savings of 360,000 euro. Energy reductions of 20% were achieved. This pilot took place from 2012 until 2014 within the Interreg-project ACE (Answers to the Carbon Economy).

    Swedish STEP UP companion cities meet

    STEP UP partner city Gothenburg hosted a two-day workshop with its companion cities Malmö, Borås (SE) and Bergen (NO) at the Visual arena Lindholmen in Gothenburg on the 10th and 11th of June 2014. On the first day of the meeting Gothenburg presented its Climate Program and shared their experience of developing the Program together with projects such as the Gothenburg congestion charge. Representatives from the other cities also presented the status of their climate and energy plans.  A second meeting between the cities will be held in the autumn of 2014, with focus on how to construct development- and innovative projects out of energy planning. Some of the outcomes of the meeting are described below:

    STEP UP represented at ICARB 6th international Conference in Edinburgh - 5 September 2014

    Graham Pinfield, Project Manager for the Glasgow STEP UP team will speak at the 6th ICARB Conference in Edinburgh on Glasgow's experience of preparing an enhanced Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Glasgow.

    This year the 6th ICARB Conference will bring together many of the people involved in carbon audits for buildings, micro-grids, communities, towns and cities – from experts to accounting novices. The conference will examine the approaches and methods being applied, where improvements can be made, and how to overcome barriers to more correct and relevant accounting.

    Riga publishes "Riga Smart City Sustainable Energy Action Plan for 2014 – 2020”

    The STEP UP partner city of Riga in close cooperation with an enlarged circle of stakeholders has produced the policy document - “Riga Smart City - Sustainable Energy Action Plan for 2014 – 2020” which has been approved and published by Riga City Council. This has been drafted as a follow-up to the first “Riga City - Sustainable Energy Action Plan for 2010-2020” approved by Riga City Council in 2010 in view of its commitments arising from signing the Covenant of Mayors.

    Riga STEP UP seminar - discussion of Sustainable Energy Action Plans for municipalities in Latvia

    The first in a series of joint training workshops by the international project STEP UP (Strategies Towards Energy Performance in Urban Planning), the Riga Energy Agency (REA) and the Latvian Association of Local Governments (LPS) was held in Riga City Council Chamber on Friday the 16th of May.

    The STEP UP project has helped enhance the recently completed draft Smart City Sustainable Energy Action Plan (Action Plan) for Riga.  As part of this project, local governments including Riga will share their experiences of the development of a Sustainable Energy Action Plan for municipalities.

    A sustainability meter for economic sites has been developed through the ACE (Answers to the Carbon Economy) project. The various steps to be taken to ensure a sustainable project are clearly set out in this compendium. Sustainability and sustainable building are clearly defined and given concrete form.

    EU Commission publishes new energy security strategy

    In response to the political crisis in Ukraine and the overall importance of a stable and abundant supply of energy for the EU's citizens and economy, the European Commission has released an EU energy security strategy on 28 May 2014. This strategy is based on an in-depth study of Member States' energy dependence.

    Glasgow publishes results of Citizens' Survey on Energy and Environment

    Glasgow is currently working towards reducing its carbon emissions by 30% by 2020. As part of this commitment, Glasgow City Council aims to engage stakeholders and citizens to better understand the actions which can be taken city-wide to reduce energy use and improve Glasgow’s environment. This survey provided citizens with an opportunity to have their say on energy, transport, green events and carbon reduction measures in Glasgow.

    City of Ghent announces new subsidies for sustainable mobility actions and green roofs.

    The City of Ghent has updated subsidy regulations for sustainable mobility, this was made effective from 1 May 2014.

    The city also announced that a new regulation providing subsidies for green roof installations will become effective in Ghent from 1 June 2014. Citizens, companies, schools and social housing organizations in Ghent can apply for a subsidy if they install a green roof.

    Gothenburg STEP UP Team work together on Regeneration of Frihamnen

    Frihamnen (The Free Port) – is an area of Gothenburg which until the decline of the shipbuilding industry in the 1980s had an important role in the city’s industrial sector. Since then, the area has been underdeveloped and an unused resource. There are large areas of centrally located land close to the river which holds great potential for creating attractive homes and workplaces for many people.
    At a workshop at Älvstranden Utveckling AB (the River Bank Development Corporation), on the 17th of February, the STEP UP partners of Gothenburg: the city council representatives, Älvstranden and SP teamed up discuss how the climate Strategy objectives and the vision for Älvstaden (the river city vision) can be linked with the Free Port challenges, and how pipeline projects from the STEP UP project could be involved in the process.

    Glasgow City Council to Create Green Energy Company

    Glasgow City Council is proposing to create a "green" energy company in a move to tackle fuel poverty, cut carbon emissions and create new jobs.

    Officers are investigating various models for the creation of a proposed Glasgow Energy Services Company (GLESCo).
